Check out the new arrivals in Okta’s annual list of most popular apps in 2020. Also, see the factors affecting the uptick of remote work enablement and security enterprise apps.

Around 90% of applications in Okta’s list of the top 10 fastest growing apps of 2020 are new entrants. The list is released as part of the seventh edition of the annual Business at WorkOpens a new window report by identity and access management vendor Okta. Driven by the large-scale remote workforce migration, workspace apps’ usage expanded dramatically as companies rushed to roll out new tools to enable employees to work seamlessly from their living rooms.

Amid the crisis, companies responded to the new landscape by pivoting to digital storefronts. With mobile shopping becoming increasingly popular, it’s little surprise that Amazon Business, the fastest-growing app as per Okta, saw a whopping 341% growth. Amazon Business is followed by collaboration tools Miro, Figma, and Monday.com, which picked up steam this year.

Unified communications experienced its fastest growth ever during the pandemic. Propelled by a sharp need for cloud collaboration solutions, these companies found some lucrative backwaters in a highly competitive and crowded UCaaS market. As companies big and small moved into a new world of virtual communications, Miro and Figmo made large gains on the back of strong demand for remote work solutions that work well with existing workspace software. Miro, for example, is an online whiteboard that works with Zoom for virtual collaboration. Figma is popular among designers for remote work, while Monday.com (like Asana) enables project management for distributed teams.

Okta’s CEO and co-founder Todd McKinnonOpens a new window explains how the pandemic  laid bare the security shortcomings and the urgent need to mitigate security risks across the endpoint devices, the cloud and even throughout the DevOps pipeline. “The pandemic prompted a rapid shift to remote work and drove companies to adopt innovative ways to keep their workforces connected, secure, and productive,” he said.

Besides empowering distributed work, companies also scooped up security solutions to fortify their enterprise networks, which is why FortiGate took the fifth spot. Fortinet FortiGate is a cloud-driven firewall used by employees to access corporate resources. “Malicious actors took advantage of 2020’s widespread disruption and chaos, generating an unparalleled number of cyber threats. With ill-protected devices and networks, remote workers were easy targets. To secure distributed workforces, organizations invested heavily in people-centric solutions,” McKinnon wrote in a blog post.

And as work became remote, so did hiring, which is why HR management app Lattice climbed to the sixth spot. Lattice is the first HR management tool to be featured on Okta’s most popular app list since 2016. Cloud data warehousing vendor Snowflake, 2019’s fastest-growing app, slid to the seventh position in 2020.

Meanwhile, cloud-based application security solution VMware Carbon Black, application code monitoring service Sentry, and password management solution 1Password took the #8, #9, and #10 spots in the list.

“This year has been an anomaly for so many reasons, and that’s reflected in the record-setting turnover in our fastest growing apps and integrations,” adds McKinnon.

These numbers are derived from anonymized data obtained from Okta’s network of 9,400 customers and over 6,500 cloud, mobile and web apps, and IT infrastructure integrations.
