AMD’s big announcement at CES 2021 shows how the semiconductor giant has been slowly chipping away at Intel’s dominance in the desktop CPU segment. Now, the chipmaker is taking things up a notch with a new lineup of the latest Ryzen 5000 series mobile processorsOpens a new window , known for delivering significant performance gains and battery life for gamers and professionals.

As recent reports indicate, AMD has been turning in one of the best quarters in its history in the desktop PC segment. Mercury Research’sOpens a new window Q3 2020 x86 CPU market share report suggests that with Lisa Su at the helm, AMD’s desktop share has grown over 12 consecutive quarters — its highest since Q4 2013. Another key market indicator is the Steam Hardware surveyOpens a new window (a major trendspotter) which shows AMD’s CPU market share climbed to 26.51% in November.

For Intel, though growth is steady, it’s hardly impressive. Data from StatistaOpens a new window indicates in Q4 2020, 61.4% of x86 computer processor or CPU tests recorded were from Intel processors, a drop from the 64.9% share seen in previous quarters.  However, in the laptop CPU segment, Intel had a formidable 80% share Opens a new window in the last quarter of 2020.

Clearly, the COVID-19 pandemic has been a major accelerator for the PC boom. As AMD forges ahead in the desktop segment, Saeid MoshkelaniOpens a new window , senior vice president and general manager for the Client business unit, says the PC has become an even more essential part of how we work, play and connect and users demand more performance, security and connectivity.

Talking about AMD’s unprecedented progress, Moshkelani added, “The new AMD Ryzen 5000 Series Desktop and Mobile Processors bring the best innovation AMD has to offer to consumers and professionals as we continue our commitment to delivering best-in-class experiences with instant responsiveness, incredible battery life and fantastic designs. With our PC partners, we are delivering top-quality performance and no-compromise solutions alongside our record-breaking growth in the notebook and desktop space in the previous year.”

The Ryzen series has two categories: the high-performance H-series and ultra-mobile U-Series processors. Aimed squarely at gamers, AMD Ryzen 5000 H-Series mobile processors can exponentially boost the gaming experience and feature up to 8 cores and 16 threads and are built atop the new AMD “Zen 3” architecture.
