Are Developers Happier in Their Role Amid COVID-19?

A recent survey on the changing work culture revealed that developers are happier to be working remotely. This approach is shown to increase job satisfaction and enhance efficiency — a win-win situation for employers and employees.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought a new way of working and operating in the business world. While some sectors are still struggling to pull themselves up, others have found a new and better way to work. One such sector is IT, specifically IT developers, who are a vital part of the IT landscape. 

This week, software delivery platform, Harness, released its 2020 State of Developer Satisfaction ReportOpens a new window which reveals that 52% of U.S. developers are happier in their roles since they started working remotely. This may be credited to the increased spending on remote work technologies to help professionals work better. The company surveyed 500 IT and engineering professionals across the software and finance industries. 

The report further revealed that developers have grown to value their companies more in this critical situation. 43% said that their team’s deployment velocity has increased since COVID-19, and 74% admitted that their companies plan to maintain remote and distributed teams, which has increased dramatically from the pre-pandemic number of 2%. It revealed that millennials seem happier and more comfortable with the new arrangement as compared to the population above the age of 55+.

“The sudden switch to work from home after Coronavirus lockdowns blurred the boundaries between work and home for millions of people worldwide. Recently, another report by cloud service provider, 2nd WatchOpens a new window , revealed that engineering and IT had been the most aggressive departments when it comes to spending on work from home technologies. “36% said these departments have more remote workers than other departments, and 30% said the reason is because the work they’re doing is more critical to the success of the business”, the report stated.
