Atlassian Joins Twitter, Shopify & Facebook, Goes Fully Remote

Australian software tech giant Atlassian will allow its 5000-strong workforce to continue remote work permanently, even after the crisis ends.  

Atlassian has joined the ranks of Twitter, Square, Shopify, and Facebook by going all-in on remote work. The company announcedOpens a new window it would continue with the distributed work mode even after the pandemic subsides and shutdowns are lifted. 

According to Co-CEO Scott Farquhar, Atlassian intended to shift to remote work before the outbreak hit. The pandemic simply accelerated their resolve for distributed work. Farquhar said, “While COVID-19 has turned our worlds upside down, it’s also accelerated goals Atlassian has had for some time. For years, we’ve been working as a highly distributed global company, experimenting with fully remote teams, and iterating on practices that are essential for building diverse distributed teams.”

Atlassian, well-known for its team collaboration tools like Confluence, Jira, Crucible, Hipchat and Trello is well-poised to lead the remote work revolution. Farquhar wrote, “We believe that the post-COVID world will see an increase in distributed work in all industries, and we want to lead this for ourselves and our customers. Our products help teams collaborate from anywhere, and our practices and learnings can help usher our customers into the future of work with us.”

Farquhar further added, “We can’t coach from the sidelines, we need to walk the walk — one mile in front of our customers. We need to run into the obstacles before they do, and clear them by building world-class solutions.”

The enterprise software vendor in June unveiled plans for a plush new Sydney headquarters costing $1 billion. As the latest announcement requires, the new model of work will require the headquarters to be designed accordingly.

Meanwhile, Google and Apple are also allowing employees to work remotely at least until 2021.

Salesforce found out that 64% prefer a hybrid work environment, i.e., where employees have the flexibility to alternate between working from home (or anywhere for that matter) and the office. A study by Xerox also indicated that hybrid work environments are the future with conventional ways of work being put on the back seat.
