AWS Cloud Services Restored After a Day-Long Outage

A multi-hour Amazon Web Services outage on Wednesday disrupted major online services like Adobe Spark, Roku, Flickr, Baltimore Sun, and Glassdoor. And funnily enough, AWS wasn’t able to post updates on their own Service Health Dashboard.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) suffered a multi-hour interruption of services on Wednesday, November 25. The disruption knocked several websites and applications offline, bringing services to a grinding halt just before the biggest year-end online shopping festivals.

The AWS outage was limited mainly to the North American region and affected Amazon KinesisOpens a new window , among other products. Amazon Kinesis is the cloud-based service for real-time analytics (capturing, storage, and processing) of large amounts of data from several distributed streams. This includes event logs, and social media feeds and is intended for real-time applications.

A spokesperson for AWS stated, “Kinesis has been experiencing increased error rates this morning in our US-East-1 region that’s impacted some other AWS services. AWS is one of the premier cloud service providers globally, and the tech giant is witnessing a significant COVID-driven spike for cloud-based services, with net sales rising by 37% year-over-year in Q3Opens a new window .

Some of the major companies that suffered downtime are Adobe Spark platform, image and video-hosting provider Flickr, cloud communications provider Twilio, Baltimore Sun, device maker Roku, and Glassdoor.

Besides client websites, the outage has also affected the company’s “ability to post updates to the Service Health DashboardOpens a new window .”

According to Downdetector, reports of downtime started pouring in early on Wednesday around 08:30 AM EST and peaked at 11:47 AM EST.

Meanwhile, Flickr’s status update pageOpens a new window showed its photo and video hosting services were completely restored late in the evening at 11:26 PM EST.

AWS updated customers that they have started restoring all traffic to Kinesis Data Streams from internet-facing endpoints at 1:30 AM EST (November 26) and are incrementally restoring “all requests to Kinesis Data Streams using VPC Endpoints.”

An issue caused by the ongoing AWS global outage may impact some features on Fiverr. Things are looking better and we’re working hard to make sure to everything is back to normal.

The outage also hit AWS servicesOpens a new window such as Lambda, LEX, Macie, Managed Blockchain, Marketplace, MediaLive, MediaConvert, Personalize, Rekognition, SageMaker, and Workspaces.
