Cisco Webex Gains FedRAMP Authorization for Messaging

Cisco on Monday, announced it received FedRAMP authorization for its Webex messaging services. This implies that public sector organizations looking for a safe way to communicate via text-based messaging can now leverage Cisco Webex messaging in addition to its calling and video meet functionality. Cisco calling and meetings are already FedRAMP authorized.

Webex’s robust security mechanism, a must-have feature for FedRAMP authorization, includes application-based policy enforcement, third-party reviews and audits, constant monitoring with respect to vulnerabilities and separation of agency-wise data on different servers located within the United States. Cisco claims messaging in Webex to be ‘the only end-to-end encrypted messaging solution – with true end-to-end encryption of content in use, in transit and at rest.’  This includes messages, files and whiteboards.

Cisco’s cloud-basedOpens a new window service for collaboration data security is complemented by its promising functional appeal. Messaging in Webex, along with calling and meeting will be available in a single unified application.

Cisco Webex messaging solution can be integrated with Unified Communications Manager Cloud for Government (UCMC-G) or Unified Communications Manager (UCM), enabling government employees to access files and messages securely. 

Its compatibility ranges across multiple devices and platforms including: 

  • Cisco Jabber – Instant messaging, voice, HD video, voice messaging, desktop sharing, and conferencing from your Windows PC, Mac OS, iPhone, iPad, and Android devices
  • Cisco Webex Room Series – Virtual video conferencing
  • Cisco IP Phone 7800 Series – Voice comms via IP telephony
  • Cisco IP Phone 8800 Series – Wideband audio communications, with support to 720p HD video in some models, telephony
  • Cisco DX Series – Desktop collaboration
  • Cisco TelePresence SX and MX Series – Customized video conferencing

The solution is also compatible with pre-existing office and workflow applications like Microsoft Office, calendars, Box, Microsoft OneDrive, and API-driven integrations such as ServiceNow.

Federal agencies leveraging Cisco Webex will be able to meet Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) requirements for cloud systems, for the above integrations as well as the following upcoming feature updates in Webex Meetings:

  • Ability to handle 200 video endpoints in meetings
  • An updated meeting roster
  • Grid view: 5×5
  • Ability to join meetings wirelessly
