Organizations that deal with sensitive information like Personally Identifiable Information (PII), financial data, or health information often use confidential computing solutions to reduce the risk of a data breach on the public cloud.

Confidential computing is an emerging approach to securing data when it is in use, versus current dominant approaches that secure data that is mainly at rest (i.e. in storage or transit over the network). Encrypting data in use is a challenge that confidential computing aims to address, by protecting data and applications while they run, in a secure enclave.

“Fortanix provides a single solution to manage the entire enclave lifecycle – including creation, deployment, monitoring, and auditing. The solution manages confidential computing infrastructure and applications across multiple public clouds and on-premises environments to provide complete visibility. Fortanix makes it possible to enable existing applications, enclave-native applications, and pre-packaged application to run in a secure enclave in minutes. This capability is unique and enables widespread adoption of confidential computing with no development or integration costs.” shared Faiyaz Shahpurwala, Chief Product Officer, Fortanix exclusively with Toolbox.

Secure enclaves isolate the data and code, thus preventing unauthorized access when in use. The environment blocks all attempts to modify any application code and data during use, and enhances security assurance for organizations dealing with sensitive and regulated data.

In April 2019, the Linux Foundation has announced their intent to form the Confidential Computing ConsortiumOpens a new window , with the stated goal of ‘focusing on projects securing data in use and accelerating the adoption of confidential computing through open collaboration.”

At the time, the joint releaseOpens a new window by member organizations had stated “Confidential computing will enable encrypted data to be processed in memory without exposing it to the rest of the system and reduce exposure for sensitive data and provide greater control and transparency for users.”

The Fortanix Confidential Computing Enclave Manager runs the applications in a secure environment but first verifies its integrity of these environments and also manages the application life cycle. It ensures that the data and code of application remain secure in storage and during deployment.

The solution deploys critical security policies like identity verification, data access control, and code attestation for enclaves that are required for confidential computing. It also runs and manages existing applications, new enclave-native applications, and pre-packaged applications.

Gartner has recognized FortanixOpens a new window as a sample vendor for confidential computing in several of its Hype Cycle reports.
