HPE Moves Into SD-WAN for Intelligent Edge With Silver Peak Buy

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) took over Silver Peak to support its subsidiary Aruba’s intelligent edge ambitions. The company splurged $925 million to acquire Silver Peak and its SD-WAN technology.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) completed the acquisition of Silver Peak on Tuesday. The company acquired Silver Peak for its software-defined networking (SD-WAN) portfolio of products. The acquisition puts HPE on the SD-WAN map along with existing market leaders like Cisco, VMware and Fortinet. 

HPE acquired Silver Peak for $925 million and its SD-WAN solutions are expected to augment Aruba ESP (Edge Service Platform) through edge-to-cloudOpens a new window networking. 

Antonio Neri, president and CEO of HPE, said, “WAN transformation is a key component of HPE’s Intelligent Edge and edge-to-cloud vision and growth strategy. Armed with a comprehensive SD-WAN portfolio with the addition of Silver Peak, we will accelerate the delivery of a true distributed cloud model and cloud experience for all apps and data wherever they live.”

SD-WAN is being seen as a game-changer in enabling distributed work. The technology provides unparalleled flexibility and scalability of operations, cost control, and securityOpens a new window . It can also help shrink organizational reliance on physical infrastructure for day-to-day activities. The market for SD-WAN is expected to hit $8.4 billion in 2025.

With the Silver Peak acquisition, HPE is now well-off to capitalize on the vast market potential in SD-WAN-driven enterprise cloud transformation. Keerti Melkote, president of Intelligent Edge for Hewlett Packard Enterprise and founder of Aruba Networks, said, “With the evolving nature of the hybrid workplace, enterprises are looking to extend connectivity to branch locations and enable secure work-from-home experiences. Silver Peak founder and CEO, David Hughes, will continue in a leadership position at HPE, and serve as the senior vice president of the WAN business in Aruba Networks.
