IBM launches a new Power E1080 server to deliver frictionless hybrid cloud experience to its enterprise customers. The company has instilled AI, security, and hybrid cloud capabilities at the processor level.

The pandemic has accelerated the cloud adoption journey for businesses across all industries. IT decision-makers strategized their business operations, IT infrastructure as the dynamic IT landscape saw the emergence and rise of hybrid cloud. Hybrid cloud computing combines both public cloud, private cloud and on-premises infrastructure that provides businesses flexibility and better control of their data.

A new report by Flexera found that 82% of enterprises have embraced hybrid cloud strategy. This indicates that enterprises of all sizes are leveraging the benefits of the hybrid cloud and meeting the changing demands of consumer expectations. However, the hybrid cloud environment has certain challenges, including data security, compliance issues, scalability, and hardware expenses.

On September 8, 2021, IBM unveiled a new IBM Power E1080 server system powered by its latest Power10 processors designed for hybrid cloud environments. According to the company, the new server supports IT modernization and delivers scalability and agility.

The server is built on a Samsung manufactured 7nm Power10 processor that can deliver 30% more performance per core, over 50% better total capacity at the socket and system level, and 33% lower energy consumption than the predecessor.

Dylan Boday, VP of product management for AI and hybrid cloud, saidOpens a new window “The E1080 is IBM’s first system designed from the silicon up for hybrid cloud environments, a system tailor-built to serve as the foundation for our vision of a dynamic and secure, frictionless hybrid cloud experience.”

The new server is designed for enterprises looking for speed, performance, agility, security and efficiency. With the new server, IBM plans to meet the growing demand for a frictionless hybrid cloud experience. E1080 can scale with power private cloud for dynamic capacity, so customers can scale up and down with unused CPU capacity as needed and only pay for additional resources. This will provide customers cloud-like flexibility across hybrid cloud environments and mitigate the cost.

Ken King, general manager, OpenPOWER for IBM Systems & Technology Group, explained with Power10, all data in memory is encrypted when in transit between memory and processor, ensuring end-to-end security.

King saidOpens a new window , “With these innovations along with new in-core defense for return-oriented programming (ROP) attacks and support for post quantum encryption and fully homomorphic encryption, IBM Power E1080 makes the server platform family that is among the most secure even better.”

IBM’s new server is projected to be a direct competition to Intel and AMD.

Apart from the server launch, Big Blue also introduced a new tiered Power Expert Care service to protect their customers’ hardware and software systems from rising cyber threats.

Nataraj NagaratnamOpens a new window , chief technology officer, cloud security, IBM CloudOpens a new window , previously told Toolbox, “As reliance on data grows in the hybrid cloud era, there’s increased commitment to security across industries, especially in highly-regulated sectors. An industry-specific approach is needed to address unique regulatory compliance and security needs.”

IBM’s new servers are expected to start by the end of September 2021.
