MongoDB Extends Partnership With Google Cloud to Accelerate Cloud Migration

Cloud database software company MongoDB has extended its two-year-old partnership with Google Cloud for another five years. The partnership will help developers build applications that tie into MongoDB Atlas and various Google Cloud services such as BigQuery, Dataproc, Dataflow, and Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), and Tensorflow.

The announcement follows another partnership which MongoDB closed with Tencent Cloud in early February. The partnershipOpens a new window enables customers to use MongoDB-as-a-Service to build, deploy and scale applications across Tencent’s global cloud infrastructure that encompasses 27 regions worldwide.

According to MongoDB, its extended partnership with Google Cloud will enable organizations to accelerate their migration process using ready-made integrations and reference architectures developed by the two companies. By incorporating MongoDB Atlas with Google Cloud services like BigQuery and Pub/Sub, organizations will be able to modernize their database stack while migrating to the cloud with the help of avant-garde analytics and machine learning capabilities of Google Cloud.

In February last year, Google acquiredOpens a new window Cornerstone Technology to gain access to the latter’s mainframe modernization tools. These tools now support MongoDB Atlas to help application developers convert legacy COBOL code on mainframes into modern Java-based applications.

“Google Cloud and MongoDB have a long-standing, open, and transparent partnership, focused on driving customer success across multiple industries with MongoDB Atlas on Google Cloud. Year over year, we’ve seen a tremendous increase in joint customer engagements and adoption,” said Alan Chhabra, senior vice president of Worldwide Partners, MongoDB. He added that the acceleration of product integration and the strong product-market fit of MongoDB added momentum in their sales collaboration.

In 2020, the general-purpose database platform MongoDB Atlas, which now accounts for almost half of MongoDB’s total revenues, became a fully managed service directly integrated with the Google Cloud Marketplace. Atlas offers integrated billing and user support for the companies’ joint customers, enabling Google Cloud customers to use its “pay as you go” feature to consolidate their expenses towards Google Cloud services and MongoDB Atlas into a single bill. MongoDB Atlas is currently available on all 24 Google Cloud regions.

The partnership with Google Cloud has also made Atlas the first cloud database that enables organizations to run applications simultaneously on Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure without the added operational complexity of managing data replication and migration across clouds. Recently, MongoDB inked deals with Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, and Wipro to help customers modernize workloads as they migrate to the cloud and migrate legacy data to MongoDB with substantial ROI at scale.

One of the most significant advantages of this partnership, according to MongoDB, is the unique data model that directly supports businesses, especially the financial and retail services, where it has seen a growth of 300% YoY. According to the company’s Q3 earnings reportOpens a new window , its quarterly revenue grew by 38% YoY to touch $150.8 million, with MongoDB Atlas accounting for 47% of total Q3 revenues with a growth of 61% YoY. 

Based in New York, MongoDB has a presence in over 100 countries and boasts over 22,600 customers worldwide. The MongoDB database platform has enjoyed over 130 million downloads, and there have been more than one million MongoDB University registrations so far.
