Moz Rolls Out a ‘True’ Competitor Analysis Tool and New Metrics

Moz has launched a new competitor analysis tool, True Competitor, to help businesses and digital marketers identify a website’s real competitors who are fighting to gain prominence on search engine result pages (SERPs). The tool is part of the research tools in Moz Pro. It is currently in beta and supports the U.S., Canada, U.K., and Australian markets. Besides the tool, the search engine optimization (SEO) technology giant has also launched two new metrics — Rivalry and Overlap, as part of the release.

How True Competitor Works

The new competitor analysis SEO tool can identify up to 25 top SERP competitors. The competing domains are then listed in descending order by the new metrics. The metrics consider factors such as the company’s and competing websites’ domain authority (DA), keyword volume, keyword overlap, ranking performance, and click-through rate (CTR) to identify competitors.

Once the top competitors are identified, Moz Pro users can input the data to the other tools in the suite for further analysis — for example, identifying the keyword overlap and gap using Moz’s Keyword Explorer.

Moz was acquired by iContact, an email marketing company and a subsidiary of J2 Global, in June this year. This is the first major tool release since the takeover. True Competitor is currently available to all customers in Moz Pro.
