On a Mission to Deliver a Unified Database Platform: MongoDB announces 4.4 and Realm Sync

essidsolutions

Have most cloud migrations merely replicated the complexities and drawbacks of the traditional datacenter? MongoDB’s latest launches, and general availability of its Cloud platform products comes with the mission to unify distributed data sources and enhance developer productivity.

At the virtual conference MongoDB.live 2020, the next-gen general-purpose database company MongoDB made a slew of announcements, highlighting that data is at the heart of modern applications and the need to break data silos and deliver a unified developer-optimized platform. Last yearOpens a new window , all the MongoDB Cloud platform products that the company announced in preview mode are now generally available. The highlight of the announcements is the launch of MongoDB 4.4 and a new database synchronization platform, MongoDB Realm for mobile developers.

Dev Ittycheria, President & CEO of MongoDB sharesOpens a new window , “Most cloud migrations have merely replicated the complexities and drawbacks of the traditional datacenter. With MongoDB Cloud, developers can finally leave the burden of data silos and sprawl behind and truly unlock the value of data through a unified development experience.”

What Does MongoDB Offer?

Founded in 2007, MongoDB is an open-source, NoSQL document-based databaseOpens a new window that stores data in documents and comprises a set of tools that enables data engineers, analysts, and developers to harness the power of data and create powerful applications at a very reasonable costOpens a new window . With more than 110 million downloads of MongoDB platform, the company uses the popular NoSQL technology that can handle a high volume of data stores in the database and reduce the complexities around the data model, thus optimizing developers’ productivity.

MongoDB 4.4 Release in Public Beta

Released on popular demand by the MongoDB community, MongoDB 4.4 database (in beta mode) enables developers to develop transactional, operational, and analytical applications faster and more efficiently than any other database. With improvements in query and shardings, here are some of the key enhancements in MongoDB 4.4:

· Union: it is an operator that merges data from different datasets into a single set (queries) to perform deeper analytics for smarter decisions

· Refined Shard Keys: it offers flexibility to adjust data across clusters or data locations as and when applications scale up.

· Hedged Reads: designed to handle and deliver the fastest solution to the client request, by routing the query to all nodes.

Atlas Data Lake and Atlas Search in GA

A recent Gartner surveyOpens a new window found that by 2022, 75% of all databases will be deployed or migratedOpens a new window to a cloud platform. This indicates that businesses have understood the potential of the cloud and now is the right time to shift databases on the cloud. Along the same lines, MongoDB Cloud platform made two of the major products generally available- Atlas Data Lake and Atlas Search.

Altas Data Lake is a serverless data lake that helps developers to extract structured data and run the query using MongoDB Query Language (MQL) on Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) buckets. With this, the developers don’t have to worry about installing and managing the servers and other infrastructure.

Guy Harrison, author of Next Generation Databases explainsOpens a new window the advantages of Atlas Data Lake, “The Atlas Data Lake provides at least two significant advantages. First, it provides a way for data in object files to be queried using the familiar MongoDB syntax, without having to first load these files intoco MongoDB itself. Second, it potentially provides a very low-cost storage mechanism that can be used to store “cold” MongoDB data.”

Coming to Atlas Search, it is an easy, full-text search engine to perform searches of Atlas datasets. Built on top of Apache Lucene (a library for full-text search), Atlas Search is integrated with the MongoDB Atlas with an API to run MQL-based search queries, which therefore reduces the burden of developers to set up and maintain a separate search platform.

Sahir Azam, Chief Product Officer, MongoDB sharesOpens a new window , “Atlas Search eliminates all of these headaches by offering developers a search engine that uses the same language and data model of the core database. MongoDB believes search is an extension of the foundational layer upon which modern applications are built, so we’ve made it that easy for developers. Just query data and let us worry about the rest.”

Also Launched: MongoDB Realm

Last year when MongoDB acquiredOpens a new window mobile database company, Realm, it had one agenda- simplify mobile developers’ work by moving data between devices at the edge and to the core seamlessly.

“By combining Realm’s wildly popular mobile database and synchronization platform with the strengths of Stitch, we will eliminate a lot of work for developers by making it natural and easy to work with data at every layer of the stack, and to seamlessly move data between devices at the edge to the core backend,” sharedOpens a new window Eliot Horowitz, CTO, and co-founder, MongoDB, last year.

MongoDB unified its serverless platform MongoDB Stitch with Realm’s mobile database and synchronization platform to release MongoDB Realm. MongoDB Realm enables developers to build a best-in-class mobile application that does not drain the battery life or depend on devices’ excessive network data. One of the new features which is currently in beta is Realm Sync, which enables bi-directional data synchronization between the Realm’s mobile client on the front end and Atlas on the backend.

Drew DiPalma, Senior Product Manager and Katherine Maughan, Senior Product Marketing Manager shareOpens a new window , “MongoDB Realm gives anyone – whether you’re working solo or part of a larger team – the ability to start innovating and optimizing right away. Realm’s app dev services speed the rate at which you can build your apps, and it’s guaranteed to scale with you, powered by Atlas on the backend.”
