Backup-as-a-Service leader Rewind has acquired German BaaS company BackHub to expand its backup service offerings to GitHub repositories. The acquisition is a result of Rewind’s ambition to offer a BaaS solution for every major SaaS tool, including those offered by Big Tech giants.

The acquisitionOpens a new window of BackHub, the 7-year-old German BaaS provider for GitHub repositories, comes as a major boost to Rewind’s expansion plans. Microsoft’s GitHub is the world’s largest code base, boasting over 40 million users and 190 million repositories and over 1,000 companies, including 72% of the Fortune 50 companies, use BackHub to back up their data stored in Git repositories.

Rewind caters to more than 80,000 organizations of various sizes, and offers all its clients immediate access to functional, and all-inclusive backups, facilitating recovery of crucial data lost due to any kind of error, unlike other SaaS providers. It also raised its first significant outside funding last month, securing $15 millionOpens a new window in a series A round led by Inovia Capital. Thanks to the fresh acquisition, Rewind will offer BackHub Opens a new window through the startup’s website as well as the GitHub marketplace, with the same pricing structure.

“GitHub is one of the most popular SaaS applications in the world, trusted by millions to host their source code. Adding BackHub to our growing portfolio of backup products aligns perfectly with our vision of protecting all the vital data businesses use every day,” said Mike Potter, CEO and co-founder of Rewind.

When asked about the value-prop for SaaS providers to tap Rewind for backup services, Potter told Toolbox, “We’ve discovered that SaaS providers don’t typically bake these data protection solutions into their products. It’s resource-intensive to sift thought millions, maybe billions of data points, to find lost data. They are essentially searching for a needle in a field of haystacks. And from the user perspective, they are costly and time-consuming to maintain.”

Various SaaS platforms have their individual system-wide data backup tools, these however are not accessible to their customers at an account level. Based on the “shared responsibility model,” the platform owner accepts only a part of responsibility for the infrastructure security and disaster recovery. The rest of the work – like managing permission, passwords, creating backup, and more is to be taken care of by the user.

Potter adds companies should adapt to the practise of keeping backups on a separate server, from the server the SaaS tool is using. Using a BaaS solution like Rewind alleviates all these problems. The company continues to follow its ultimate goal of offering a BaaS solution for every major SaaS tool available today. It currently boasts a client profile that includes BigCommerce, QuickBooks Online, Shopify, and Shopify Plus, protecting over 33 billion data points globally.

Rewind is presently in the early stages of introducing additional backup support for Trello, Jira, Zendesk, and Xero and with the acquisition of BackHub, will also support GitLab and BitBucket with early-stage programs.

What gives Rewind an edge in the highly competitive BaaS market is its approach beyond the ‘the big three’ in SaaS. While Salesforce, Office 365 and Google Workspace are market leaders in SaaS, Rewind focusses on businesses that use dozens of other SaaS applications, such as BigCommerce, QuickBooks Online, Shopify, and Shopify Plus, and need to protect their crucial data.

The Backup-As-A-Service market is growing at a dramatic pace. With companies embracing remote work for the long -haul and turning to the cloud to store vital data, the need to backup and restore data quickly has also increased. “We are also seeing more requests from customers to have one platform which backs up their data. We think that’s just the natural evolution of where BaaS is heading and Rewind is a strong position to help companies with that,” Potter added.
