Research on U.S. payroll data reveals magnitude of the impact of COVID-19 on the labor marketAt the State of the Labor Market Summit 2020 hosted virtually by ADP Research Institute Opens a new window (ADPRI) on June 25, the severity of the crisis on the labor market was assessed. ADP’s weekly anonymized administrative payroll data was evaluated to identify the evolution of the U.S. labor market during the first three months of the COVID-19 pandemic. A key finding was that employment losses have been concentrated disproportionately among lower-wage workers.

On the bright side, a panel at the summit also discussed how the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) caused a rebound in employment in smaller firms.

Analyzing metrics and data has become one of the core functions of HR departments. Yet, as per the XpertHR’s 2020 HR Metrics SurveyOpens a new window of 420 U.S. employers, only 15% of the HR departments had a dedicated data analyst. As HR analytics becomes more important, hiring an analyst will enable organizations to manage workforce insights better.

The responding organizations shared that they analyzed at least one HR metric, and 48% confirmed that their finance department is involved in this task.

As a result, they have completed more upskilling and reskilling courses in 3 months than were completed in 2019. LHH candidates had completed over 28,500 courses in the period from March 1 to May 30, 2020, as compared to 23,000 courses in all of 2019.

More than half of businesses (57%) have offered mental or emotional support to their employees. Employers have also changed work schedules to make them more flexible and holistic.
