Users have a tendency to not answer callsOpens a new window from an unknown number. Oftentimes, the call turns out to be a fraudulent activity to scam users. Stephen Brough, Product Partnerships Lead at Google said, “Businesses and consumers rely on phone calls to communicate with each other, but robocalls, spam and fraud have eroded customer trust, and a majority of consumers no longer answer the phone if they do not recognize the caller’s number or if the number is anonymous.”

Gal Vered, Product Manager at Google noted in a blog postOpens a new window , “We’ve been piloting Verified Calls for a few months, and the early results indicate that it improves the likelihood of someone answering a call.” As such, the integrated solution has the potential to improve answer rates and engagement on outbound calls, thereby transforming the call experience.

Google Verified Calls leverages Neustar’s STIR/SHAKEN call framework to verify and authenticate identity of callers without impacting privacy. “This is done in a secure way—Google doesn’t collect or store any personally identifiable information after verification.” STIR/SHAKEN also identifies spoofed calls and can stop them or display a warning on the user screen,” Vered adds.

Neustar cites four ways in which the user has complete info on why he is receiving the call. They are:

  • Verification: It signals that the calling enterprise (and the phone numbers it uses) has been vetted, so its identity is legitimate
  • Authentication: Each call uses STIR/SHAKEN digital certificates to sign and certify that the caller ID has not been compromised
  • Branding: It shows the company’s identity via name and logo, which helps aid recognition
  • Context: It gives the user the information they need, including the reason the business is calling

James Garvert, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Caller Identification Solutions at Neustar said, “We’re proud to work with Google to enable contextual and authenticated calls on a leading mobile platform and to empower and inform consumers across the globe to trust the calls they receive.”

Google will initiate the roll-out of Verified Calls for Android devices that don’t have it pre-loaded onto the Phone app later this week. The identity solution will be first rolled out to users in the U.S., Brazil, Mexico, Spain, and India.
