Twitter Rebrands Itself While Competitor Threads Flounders

  • Elon Musk has moved forward with his plan to rebrand Twitter as the ‘X’ app, finally making Twitter Inc. completely obsolete.
  • Following an explosive start, Meta’s Threads app is facing significant struggles to keep up with its competition with Twitter.

In another major shift for the company, Twitter has officially been rebranded to “X” after owner Elon Musk changed the iconic blue bird logo of the social media platform. While Twitter.com is still live, the changed branding is clearly visible on the website, with the bird logo replaced with a stylized X. The website x.com now redirects to the Twitter website.

Early on Monday, Musk tweeted an Image of the new brand on Twitter’s headquarters building.

The company has been facing significant challenges, including the launch of a competitor app from Meta, limits on daily tweet views, falling ad revenue, and issues with Twitter Blue. The move comes with Musk’s vision to create an everything app, going beyond the functionalities of social media sharing. According to posts by CEO Linda Yaccarino, the X app, backed by artificial intelligence, will cover audio, video, messaging, banking/payments, marketplaces, etc.

Meta’s Threads Sees Massive Drop in Active Users

While the X app is taking its first steps, competitor app Threads by Meta is struggling to retain the momentum it achieved at launch. The app, which was dubbed the ‘Twitter Killer’ is currently witnessing a major slump in user engagement. Despite claims of a large user base, the number of daily active users has fallen by a massive 70% — from 44 million in July to 13 million currently. In addition, users, on average, are spending only 4 minutes on Threads compared to the initial 19 minutes.

Twitter, on the other hand, held a massive user base of 200 million active users. This slump in Threads’ users may not bode well for the future of the app. India, Brazil, and the U.S. have been the leading markets adopting Threads, accounting for 32%, 22%, and 16% of downloads, respectively. The challenge for Meta and Threads is expected to get bigger, with Jack Dorsey’s Bluesky making waves.
